   BANGLADESH

Respected Sir,

You would very kindly recall that in our earlier letter dated November 24, 98 sent by registered post, we had focused, with facts and figures, how the Hindu minority in Bangladesh were being scientifically subjected to oppression and repression and forced to quit their ‘Homeland’, for seer physical survival. The ushering in of A swami League rule in 1996 after more than two decades had kindled hopes in the hearts of every member of the Hindu minority. Sad to say, we find that the fanatic/ fundamentalist groups Dressiest with their highly offensive and perverse design of making Bangladesh a 100% Islamic State by scientifically driving out all minorities by hook or by crook from Bangladesh.

2.   As part of this nefarious design, the so-called Islamists, in the name of religion, were primarily targeting the minority members in the interior villages. In our last memorandum of Nov.24, 1998, we had produced statistics to show how villages in the district of Nature were systematically made Hindu-free Zones. Herewith, we enclose another data sheet at Appending-A showing the reduction of Hindu population Graph in villages of district like Pabna, Bhola, Barisal, Noakhali and even a part greater Dhaka. This Should be a matter of great shame for Bangladesh Particularly in the light of the fact that Muslim Population in every village aft west Bengal has maintained a distinctly upward growth rate.

3.   We continue to receive reports about torture and excesses on sections of Hindu minorities in interior villages of Bangladesh from our representatives stationed there. We send herewith another fact-sheet (Appendix-B) giving brief detail of eleven more offensive actions on Hindus perpetrated by Islamic fanatic groups. We hoped a better deal now that the Al upholding the secular-democratic spirit of ‘Liberation’ was in power. It looks that the Al was unable to fight the fundamentalist and anti-Liberation forces to the extent desirable.

4.       We learn that Hindus in Dhaka wanted to perform ‘Kalipuja’ at the ‘desecrated’ Ramona kaliBari in  Oct.’98. Regrettably, a Hindu gathering(300/400) at the said venerated place was Lath charged by the police and made to disperse. In India, there Has been a sustained furor over the demolition of ‘Bagri Masjid’. Nobody sheds a tear for the desecration and Ramona Kali Bari in Bangladesh; what a tragedy. We Reiterate the demand for restoration and reconstruction of Ramona Kali Bari at the earliest.

                                                                                        APPENDIX-B

Brief details of some more incidents of Islamic fanatic offensive against minority Hindus in

                                                                                    Bangladesh

1.       On April 9,’98, there was an incident of desecration of a Hindu religious shrine in Bangladesh. That day, one Mold. Mansur Main (20 yrs), a local fanatic Muslim and his cohorts of village Agenais trespassed into the premises of Shri Shri Rakhal Thakur, took beef and threw the remains all around. The local Hindus protested over this desecration. The Muslim gang threatened dire consequences, if the Hindus proceeded any further.

2.       A Shiva Temple in pabna District was similarly targeted by Islamic fanatics on May 27,’98. That day, a Muslim gang trespassed into the Temple, broke open the lock and took away valuable belonging to the deity. The Temple is located at village Bother, P.S. Chatmohar, Distt. Pabna. The gang threatened the local Hindus of dire consequences if they complained to the local police.

3.       Discrimination against the Hindu minority is marked in Bangladesh. Recently, the local administration, as a relief measure was distributing Land in village Parulia, P.S.-Hatibandha, Distt. Lalmonirhat to the Landless. Regrettably, it was wren that not a single member or the minority became a beneficiary of this relief program.

4.       In another significant incident at village kalikapur, P.S. Shyamnagar, District Pabna, Muslim fanatics targeted an affluent but issueless Hindu woman. On May 20,’97, an armed gang led by one Moha. Wahab Sikdar of adjoining village Barkhapur Forcibly entered the house of the woman named Mayarani and kidnapped her. They also looted all property and even desecrated the family deity. Later, they forced Mayarani to sign legal document bequeathing all her proprety and cash to Mohd. Wahab. Not only that, her modesty was also outraged. Reduced to penury, she lost all mental balance and came over to India for Physical Survival. It was not long ago that she breathed her last but not before telling her tragedy to her well-wishers in India.

5.       A cluster of 125 village’s meluding Duaria, Deloys, Durgapur, Titiya and Happen under P.S.-Lalpur, Distt- Natore (Bangladesh) were popular Hindu villages with over one and half lakh Hindu population-an overall 30% of the total populace. For sometime now, Islamic fanatic groups, with support from the local authorities, targeted the Hindu minority in this village with design to make them quit Bangladesh. Physical torture, forcible Harassment of the women-folk kept the Hindu Minority terrorized. Gradually, the Hindus started quitting Home land for India for sheer survival. This unhappy situation commenced during the last BNP rule and has not shown any abatement even after Awaami League came to power in 1996. One Abdur Rahaman, the chief of “Jargis Bahini” and an Al leader was now carring out this anti-Hindu crusade in these villages. Recenly, some Hindus Like Dinesh Chandra Biswas of village Duaria, Samar Pramanik of village Debya, Ananda Pramanik of village Durgapur, Bhabani Singh of villageTitiya and Dulal pramanik of village Hapania were subjected to physical assault by ‘ Jargis Bahini’ cadres, Despite formal complaint to the police and the Administration, no protection was forthcoming. The reports of excesses by the ‘ Jargis Bahini’ on the minorities in a sympathetic section of the Print-media in Bangladesh also went a begging. The national and international bodies of Human Rights need ti look into it at the earliest.

6.       The popular Hindu festival ‘Durga Puja’ was celebrated every year at ‘Duga Mandir’, Uliour, Dist. Kurigram,Bangladesh. This year also , the image of the Goddess was made in the Mandir Premises, But, on Sept.12,’98,a gang by Muslim fanatics forcibly entered the premises and demolished the image without any compunction. Despite logging of a formal complaint, local police did not take any action against the culprits, Puja could not be celebrated here this year.

7.       An important religious shrine (Mahalchhara Adarsha Grameen Shiva Temple) at Mouza 262, Golabari, P.S.- Khagra chheri, Chittagong Hill Tracts was subjected to attack on Dec.9,’98 by a gang of Muslim miscreants. They entered the temple and took away the Idol and Cash/valuable of over Taka one Lakh. Before quitting the place the gangsters spoke ill of Idolatry and asked’’Malauns”  to quit Bangladesh or else face dire consequences.

8.       A highly venerated Hindu shrine called “Shri Shri Krishna Balaram Mandir” was  constructed during the Mughal rule of Bengal at vill & po Balarampur, P.S. Kaliganj, Distt- Jhenidah, Bangladesh. Gangs of Islamics Fundamentalists always wanted to descreate and destroy this religious place. On sep.9,’98, an armed gang of Muslims miscreants, comprising of 40/50 heads, were gathering near the temple. Sensing danger, the Head Priest and other Hindus inside the Temple raised a hue and cry, which brought large number of local Hindus there. This Muslim gang then resorted to firing in the air and burst Hand-boms amd made good there escape. While fleeing, the miscreants threatened to come back again .

9.       On Nov.14.’98 an armed group of Muslim miscreants raided the house of Ratikanta Mondol and Swapan Mondol of adjoing  villages Banibaha and Hirankandi respectively of P.S.- Baliakandi, Distt . Rajbar, Bangladesh and decamped with valuable costing over a lakh of Bd takas.

10.   A Hindu named woman ( Mrs. Durga rani Biswas W/O. Mohindra Biswas) of village Durgapur, P.S. Sripur, Dist. Magura (BD) was abducted from her house on oct.17 ’98 by one Mohd. Nawab Miah, a local Islamic goon and his gang. Mohindra the husband, filed a suit in the localcourt of Law (No.914/98) besides logging a complaint with the police. The Woman was recovered by the police but instead of recording her  statement, she was again hundred over to the gang of Nawab Main. Mohindre was threatened and intimidated. Fearing for his life, he is now fleeing from place with two minor sons, Biswajit & Sanjoy.

11.   On one night of Nov.20, ’98, a gang of armed fanatic Muslims raided the house of shri Gouranga Choudhuri of village kudurkhali, Napitpara, P.S. Boalkhali, Distt. Chittagong,However, the Gouranga family and othernearoy Hindus put up brave resistance forcing the intruders to retreat. In the encounter and exchange of fire, one Muslim was killed and two others of the gang ewre injured.

12.   Yet another incident revolved round the family or Shri Dinendra Barman, village Mareya-Singhpara, P.S. Debiganj. Distt. Panchagarh (BD). On Nov.9, ’98 While Dinen was away from home, Muslim miscreants enteredhis house and abducted his wife. She was later gang –waped and  finally killed brutally. A case eas only registered with the police but no result so far.
